PARENTS: YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO TIME OFF FOR YOUR CHILDREN'S SCHOOL MEETINGS

Hello,

I feel it is important that parents are aware of their rights. As a school social worker, I have been a part of countless meetings where parents need to leave their work and attend a meeting at school so that they can be an active member of their child's education. This can be challenging for the parent attempting to juggle their work and parenting responsibilities. According to Allen Smith, J.D. of the Society for Human Resource Management, parents can use FMLA to attend IEP meetings, and according to the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry parent/employees also have the right to take unpaid time off in order to attend school conferences (you may choose to use PTO or vacation time, but your employer cannot actually require it).

If you have more questions, please feel free to contact the school for additional resources or talk with your employer/HR department.
